大学への出願準備③　〜エッセイの作成〜

大学への出願書類の中で最も重要なのがエッセイです。まずは全体のスケジュールを確認して、どれだけエッセイに時間をかけられるのか考えましょう。

エッセイってそもそもどんなのがあるの？

エッセイといっても、いくつか種類があります。

　① Statement of Purpose (SOP)

　② Personal Statement

　③ 大学から与えられた特定のお題に関するエッセイ

正直に言うと、①と②の違いはほとんどありません。２つとも

どのような問題意識を持っているのか（Goals）
どういった経験からその問題意識が生まれたのか（Experience）
なぜその大学に行きたいのか（Motivation）

などをストーリーとして１つのエッセイにまとめます。強いて言えば、SOPはMotivationにより焦点を当てる必要があり、Personal StatementはExperienceにより焦点を当てる必要があります。

大学のHPの更新前にエッセイの準備なんてできるの？

どの大学もほぼ確実にSOPもしくはPersonal Statementを要求してきます。「③大学から与えられた特定のお題に関するエッセイ」については、９〜10月頃の大学のHPの更新前に対応するのは難しいですが、SOPもしくはPersonal Statementの両方に使える下書きエッセイを作成することは可能です。

過去の記事で解説したStep 4で得た内容を盛り込むことを忘れずに、1,000~2000文字の下書きエッセイを完成させ、大学への出願書類として使い回せるようにしましょう。

実際どんなエッセイ課題が要求されるの？

私が出願したコロンビア大学のSIPA (School of International and Public Affairs)で出題されたエッセイ課題（2022年11月時点）を参考までに共有します。必須ではないOptional Essayも含めて４つのエッセイを書きました。

Personal Statement: Please elaborate on why you have chosen to apply to the MIA/MPA program. How will this program enable you to achieve your career goals? Describe your academic and research interests and career objectives. (400 words maximum)
Second Essay: What are the life experiences that have prompted your commitment to public or community service? Can you identify how that commitment has shaped and is connected to past professional and community endeavors? (200 words maximum)
Optional Essay: This optional essay will allow you to discuss any issues that do not fall within the purview of the required essays. Please share any additional information about yourself that you believe would be of interest to the Admissions Committee. Please focus on information that is not already reflected in the other parts of your application or might not be clear in the information submitted. (400 words maximum)
Optional Diversity Essay: We have all had unique experiences in life. Sometimes those experiences, whether positive or negative, help define our perspective. Please share an experience or personal history that has shaped your view on diversity. Diversity includes, but is not limited to: race, ethnicity, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and physical abilities. And how that perspective would enrich the educational experience of your peers and the SIPA community. (250words maximum)
